この作品のお話
Story森の中、木の根もとにすっぽり入るようにして、茶色のフードの服を着た老人が静かに座っています。エジプトの砂漠で修行したと伝えられる聖アントニウスです。まわりには、つぼのような体の怪物や、水から顔を出すへんな生き物たち。それでも聖人は手を組み、じっと考えにふけっています。マドリードのプラド美術館にある、高さ73センチほどの小さな板絵です。
In a forest, an old man in a brown hooded robe sits quietly at the foot of a tree. He is Saint Anthony, a holy man who, according to tradition, lived in the Egyptian desert. Around him are strange creatures, such as a monster with a body like a jug and a face peeking out of the water. But the saint keeps his hands together and stays deep in thought. It is a small painting on wood, about 73 cm tall, in the Prado Museum in Madrid.
聖アントニウスは、祈りの生活の中で悪魔たちにさまざまな誘惑やいやがらせを受けたと伝えられる聖人です。オランダの画家ボスと工房は、この話をくり返し描きました。ほかの作品では悪魔が大あばれしますが、この絵の悪魔たちは小鬼のようで、どこかのんびりしています。明るい風景の中で、主役になっているのは聖人の心の静けさです。
According to legend, demons tempted and troubled Saint Anthony again and again while he lived a life of prayer. The Dutch painter Bosch and his workshop painted this story many times. In other works the demons run wild, but here they look like little goblins and seem rather relaxed. In the bright landscape, the real subject is the peace in the saint's heart.
スペイン王フェリペ2世は、フアン・デ・ベナビデスの死後にこの絵を買い、1572年にエル・エスコリアル修道院へ送りました。絵はそこに置かれたのち、1839年にプラド美術館へ移されました。2016年、オランダの研究チームが「ボス本人ではなく追随者の作」と発表すると、プラド美術館は反論し、論争は今も続いています。
King Philip II of Spain bought the painting after the death of its owner, Juan de Benavides, and sent it to the monastery of El Escorial in 1572. It stayed there until it was moved to the Prado in 1839. In 2016, a Dutch research team said it was painted by a follower, not by Bosch himself. The Prado disagreed, and the debate continues today.

Secrets2016年、ボスの作品を何年もかけて調べたオランダの研究プロジェクトが、この絵を「ボスの追随者の作」と発表しました。ちょうどプラド美術館が大きなボス展をひらいた年です。プラドは赤外線写真で見つかった下描きの描き直しを示して反論。同じ絵をめぐって、専門家の意見が真っ二つに分かれています。
In 2016, a Dutch project that had studied Bosch's paintings for years said this picture was by a follower of Bosch. It was the same year the Prado held a big Bosch exhibition. The Prado answered with infrared images that show changes in the drawing under the paint. Experts are still split over this one painting.
聖人の横でペットのように寝そべるブタは、聖アントニウスの「しるし」です。中世、聖アントニウスの名をもつ修道会はブタを育てていて、そのブタは鈴をつけて町を自由に歩くことを許されていたといわれます。そのため、この聖人の絵にはよくブタが一緒に描かれるのです。
The pig lying next to the saint like a pet is his symbol. In the Middle Ages, a religious order named after Saint Anthony raised pigs. It is said these pigs wore bells and were allowed to walk freely around towns. That is why pictures of this saint often include a pig.
聖人の茶色い服の肩（画面の左側）には、「T」の形のしるしがあります。これはギリシャ文字の「タウ」で、聖アントニウスと、彼の名をもつ修道会のマークです。題名がなくても、ブタとTのマークを見れば、当時の人はすぐに「アントニウスだ」とわかりました。
On the shoulder of his brown robe (on the left side of the picture), there is a mark shaped like a "T". It is the Greek letter tau, the symbol of Saint Anthony and the order named after him. Even without a title, people at the time knew it was Anthony when they saw the pig and the T.
ボスとその工房は、この聖人を何度も描きました。いちばん有名なのは、リスボンの国立古美術館にある三連祭壇画『聖アントニウスの誘惑』。そちらでは空を飛ぶ船や燃える村まで登場する大さわぎです。同じ聖人なのに、この絵の静けさとはまるで別世界。見くらべると面白いですよ。
Bosch and his workshop painted this saint many times. The most famous is the triptych "The Temptation of Saint Anthony" in the National Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon. It is full of chaos, with flying ships and a burning village. It is the same saint, but a completely different world from the calm of this picture. It is fun to compare them.

On the far left is a monster that looks like a big jug with arms and legs. It is a strange and funny creature, typical of Bosch.
4水の中の顔A face in the water
右下の池から、ぽっかり顔を出す生き物。泳いでいるのか、のぞいているのか、見るほどになぞめいています。
A creature pokes its face out of the pond at the bottom right. Is it swimming or peeking at us? The more you look, the stranger it gets.
