These are two hands. They are praying. Dürer drew them on blue paper in 1508. Some people tell a sad story about these hands, but it is not true. They were practice for a big painting. That painting burned in a fire.

On blue-prepared paper, two hands are pressed together in prayer. Dürer drew the shapes with dark lines and added light with thin white lines. The carefully drawn veins, tendons and wrinkles make the hands look three-dimensional. Wide sleeves seem to hold the hands from below. It is just a drawing on one sheet of paper, but it is one of the most famous pictures of hands in the world.

🦉 Fun Fact! A touching story says that Dürer's brother worked in a mine to pay for Dürer's art school, and this drawing shows the brother's damaged hands. But it was made up in the 20th century. It is not true. The drawing is a study for an apostle's hands.
