You can see every hair! A 500-year-old hare with a window in its eye.
In 1502, Dürer painted this young hare in watercolor. The background is just plain paper. The soft fur, long ears, stiff whiskers and even the claws look alive. He did not use only brown. He layered thin lines of gray, white and gold to show how soft the fur is.
He probably painted the main colors first, then added each hair with a very fine brush. He used opaque white paint, called gouache, for the light parts. At that time, it was rare to make an animal the main subject and paint it so exactly. It shows how closely Dürer studied nature.
This picture is a treasure of the Albertina in Vienna. Paper and watercolor are damaged by light, so the real one is shown only for a short time every few years. Most of the time, visitors see a copy. It appears on many souvenirs and books, and it is widely known as 'Dürer's hare' in German-speaking countries.
This is a young hare. Dürer painted it in 1502. You can see every hair and whisker. Look at its eye. You can see a little window in it! The real picture is shown only once every few years.
Look closely at the hare's eye. You can see a window with a cross-shaped frame reflected in it. This suggests Dürer drew it indoors. We do not know for sure if the hare was alive, stuffed or dead.
Watercolors fade in light. So the real hare 'sleeps' in a dark storage room with controlled temperature and humidity. It is shown only for short periods every few years. When it is, many people come to see it.
After Dürer died, this picture became very popular. In the late 1500s, artists like Hans Hoffmann painted many similar hares and animals. It shows that Dürer's work was treasured as a model.
In English, a hare and a rabbit are different animals. Hares have longer ears and back legs. They live in open fields and do not dig burrows. This picture is called 'Young Hare'.
