Story

A man in a black cap and a gown with a fur collar sits sideways at a desk, writing with a pen. He is Erasmus, a great scholar from the Netherlands. The young painter Hans Holbein the Younger, who was working in Basel, Switzerland, made this portrait in 1523. It is now in the Kunstmuseum Basel. It was painted on paper and then fixed to a wooden panel.

Erasmus studied old texts in Latin and Greek, and he was known all over Europe for books such as 'The Praise of Folly.' The words he is writing here are the opening of his Paraphrase on the Gospel of Mark. With only a quiet profile and his hands, Holbein showed a scholar deep in thought.

Erasmus sent portraits like this to friends around Europe. Later, with his introduction, Holbein went to England, painted Thomas More and others, and became court painter to King Henry VIII. Portraits of Erasmus helped Holbein make connections with patrons beyond Basel.
