A man with a strong face, in a black cap and black clothes, looks at us. He is Martin Luther, the German theologian who helped start the Reformation in the 16th century. His friend, the painter Lucas Cranach the Elder, painted him in 1528, when Luther was about 44. The portrait is now in the art collection of Coburg Castle in Germany.
In 1517, Luther published his Ninety-five Theses, which criticized practices of the Church and helped spark the Reformation. Cranach lived in the same town, Wittenberg, and his workshop made many portraits and prints of Luther. A matching portrait of Luther's wife, Katharina von Bora, painted in the same year, is also kept in this castle.
Luther portraits from Cranach's workshop spread across Germany, and many people learned what Luther looked like from pictures like this. In 1530, Luther himself stayed at Coburg Castle, where this painting now hangs, for about half a year. The portrait is kept in a place where the man himself once lived.

The small snake faintly seen on the left is Cranach's signature. It comes from a coat of arms given to him in 1508 by the Elector of Saxony: a winged snake holding a ring in its mouth. It was also used to mark works from his workshop.
Cranach was not only a painter. In Wittenberg, he ran a pharmacy and a printing business, and he even served as mayor. He was also involved in publishing Luther's German translation of the New Testament.
