Story

This painting shows Night-Shining White, a horse loved by Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang dynasty in China. Its name means 'so white it lights up the night.' Tied to a post, the horse opens its eyes wide, raises its mane and seems ready to break free. It was painted by Han Gan, a master of horse painting, around 750. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Han Gan was born into a poor family. It is said that he worked at a wine shop in the capital, Chang'an, until the poet and painter Wang Wei noticed his talent. He became a court painter and made 'portraits' of famous horses for Xuanzong. This is a 'white painting': no color, only thin ink lines and a little shading. The round body, big eyes and wide nostrils recall the heavenly horses of legend, which were linked to dragons.

For more than 1,200 years, the painting passed from emperors to collectors. Later owners and viewers added seals and comments, so the small picture became surrounded by red marks and the scroll grew longer. In the 20th century, it belonged to the British collector Sir Percival David, and the Metropolitan Museum bought it in 1977.
