Palace advice from more than a thousand years ago, covered with an emperor's seals!
This is a scene from the Admonitions Scroll, an early copy by an unknown artist after a lost design traditionally said to be by Gu Kaizhi of China's Eastern Jin dynasty. It is the very last scene. On the right, the Instructress, a teacher of the palace ladies, writes with a brush. On the left, two ladies walk toward her. The words at the upper right mean that the Instructress speaks these words of advice to the palace ladies.
The text comes from a poem written in 292 by Zhang Hua, an official of the Western Jin dynasty. He wrote it to scold an empress whose violent behavior was upsetting the court, and to teach palace women how to live properly. The scroll shows scenes that match the text. It is generally thought to have had twelve scenes. The first three are missing, so nine remain today.
The scroll that survives is not thought to be by Gu Kaizhi himself. It is probably a copy made sometime between the 5th and 7th centuries. In the 18th century, the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing dynasty treasured it and stamped many seals on it. During the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, Clarence Johnson, an officer of the British Indian Army, acquired it in Beijing amid widespread looting; the exact circumstances are unclear. The British Museum bought it from him in 1903. Because light can damage it, it is shown for only about six weeks a year.

Captain Johnson, who brought the scroll to Britain, came to the British Museum in 1902, it is said, to have the jade clasp on the scroll valued. But the real treasure was the painting. In 1903, the museum bought it for only 25 pounds.
The Qianlong Emperor loved this scroll. In 1746 he had it remounted and added his own title, a long comment and even a painting of orchids by his own hand. He stamped 37 seals on it in total. The big round seal in this scene can be read as 'Son of Heaven at Seventy'.
The Qianlong Emperor called this scroll and three paintings said to be by the Song painter Li Gonglin the 'Four Beauties', and kept them in a special room. It was clearly one of his favorite treasures.
The Palace Museum in Beijing has another version, painted in ink only on paper in the Southern Song period, in the 12th century. It has all twelve scenes, so it helps us know what the lost first scenes of the British Museum scroll looked like.
