A man and a woman sit on a rock, holding each other as they lean in for a kiss. This is The Kiss, one of Auguste Rodin's most famous works. The photo shows the marble version at Tate in London. It is more than 1.8 meters tall, larger than life. There are three large marble versions of The Kiss, and this one was made between 1901 and 1904.
The figures are Paolo and Francesca, lovers from The Divine Comedy by the Italian poet Dante. They fell in love while reading a love story together, and it led them to a sad fate. Rodin first made them as part of his huge door, The Gates of Hell.
Perhaps the happy couple did not fit a scene of Hell, so Rodin took them off the door and made them a separate work. In 1888, the French government ordered a large marble version, which is now in the Musée Rodin in Paris. In 1900, Edward Perry Warren, an American collector living in England, ordered another one. That is this statue. In 1953, Tate bought it with help from public donations.
Two people sit on a rock. They are about to kiss. They come from an old story. They fell in love when they read a book together. Look closely. Their lips do not really touch!
If you look closely, their lips do not quite touch. In the story, the lovers are discovered at the moment of their first kiss. Rodin may have frozen the second just before.
The man holds a small book in his hand. It is the love story of the knight Lancelot and Queen Guinevere, which the couple were reading. It can be hard to see from some angles, but the book is a clue to who they are.
In 2003, at Tate Britain, the artist Cornelia Parker wrapped this very statue in about a mile of string. It caused a big stir. Later, another artist cut the string without permission.
The statue arrived in England in 1904, but Warren kept it in his stables for about ten years. In 1914, it was shown in the town hall of Lewes, but some local people said it was too shocking. It was even covered with a sheet.
