A huge bronze door, over six meters tall, is covered with figures of struggling people. This is The Gates of Hell by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. The photo shows the one at the entrance of the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia. It was cast between 1926 and 1928, after Rodin's death, and is the first bronze cast of the work.
In 1880, the French government asked Rodin to make a door for a new museum of decorative arts. He chose Hell from Dante's Divine Comedy as his theme. He filled the door with nearly 200 figures. But the museum was never built. Rodin kept working on the gates for 37 years, until his death in 1917.
The gates were never cast in bronze while Rodin was alive. After his death, the American businessman Jules Mastbaum ordered two casts: one for Philadelphia and one for the Musée Rodin in Paris. Later casts also stand at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo and the Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art.

The door was made for a planned museum of decorative arts in Paris. But the plan was dropped. With no place to go, the gates became Rodin's lifelong workshop for ideas.
Many of Rodin's famous works came from figures on this door, like The Poet, later called The Thinker, and The Kiss. He took out his favorite figures, made them bigger and turned them into separate works.
The three bending men at the very top, called The Three Shades, are actually the same figure repeated three times, turned in different directions. Below them lies the world of Hell.
