She was once copper brown! A giant gift from France.
A goddess stands in New York Harbor. She holds a torch high in her right hand and a tablet in her left. Her official name is 'Liberty Enlightening the World'. The French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi made her, and she was finished in 1886. The statue is about 46 meters tall, or about 93 meters with the pedestal.
The statue was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States, for 100 years of American independence. It is made of thin copper sheets on an iron frame. Gustave Eiffel, who later built the Eiffel Tower, designed the frame. The statue was made in France and shipped in about 350 pieces.
When there was not enough money for the pedestal, the newspaper owner Joseph Pulitzer asked readers for help. More than 120,000 people gave money, and most gave less than a dollar. For many immigrants arriving by ship, the statue became a powerful sign that they had reached America. She became a symbol of freedom and hope.
This is the Statue of Liberty in New York. She was a gift from France. She is very, very tall. At first, she was brown, not green! Rain and sea air changed her color.

When she was new, she was shiny copper brown. Rain and sea air slowly made a green layer on the copper, called a patina. It took decades to become green. This layer protects the copper inside.
Her right arm with the torch was finished first. It was shown at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. To raise money, visitors could pay to climb up to the torch balcony. Her head was shown at the 1878 World's Fair in Paris.
It is hard to see from below, but there is a broken chain and shackle at her feet. Her right heel is raised. She is not standing still. She is starting to walk forward.
The first torch was damaged over many years. In 1986, it was replaced with a new one. The new flame is covered in gold leaf. The original torch is now in the Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island.
