A man sits on a rock. He rests his chin on his hand and bends forward, deep in thought. It is one of the most famous sculptures in the world, by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. This bronze, about 70 cm tall, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was cast around 1910, while Rodin was still alive.
The figure was first made for the top of The Gates of Hell, a huge door Rodin began in 1880. It is thought to show the Italian poet Dante looking down at the circles of Hell described in his poem, The Divine Comedy. So at first, it was called The Poet.
Later, the figure was shown on its own, and a much larger version was made. In 1906, it was placed in front of the Panthéon in Paris. It became a symbol of thinking all over the world. A large Thinker also sits in front of the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo.
This man sits on a rock. He thinks and thinks. At first, his name was 'The Poet'. He sat on top of a big door called 'The Gates of Hell'. Try his pose. It is not easy!
It is said that the name 'The Thinker' came from foundry workers, not from Rodin. They thought it looked like a Michelangelo statue known as 'Il Pensieroso' (the thoughtful one). The name spread around the world.
Look closely. His right elbow rests on his left thigh, not his right. It is a twisted, unusual pose. This twist makes his muscles tense, as if he is thinking with his whole body.
In 1970, someone set off a bomb under the large Thinker outside the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its legs were damaged. The museum did not fix it and still shows it in its damaged state.
This is the original size, about 70 cm, as on The Gates of Hell. His arms and legs are strong, like a worker's. Even though it is small, it feels big and heavy. That is Rodin's skill.
