America's endlessly parodied pair, but are they husband and wife?
A man with a pitchfork and a woman in an apron stand in front of a white house with a pointed window. Grant Wood, a painter from Iowa in the American Midwest, painted it in 1930. It is in the Art Institute of Chicago and is one of the most famous paintings in America.
In the town of Eldon, Iowa, Wood saw a small wooden house with a Gothic-style pointed window. He imagined the kind of people who might live there. His models were his sister Nan and his dentist, Byron McKeeby. He painted every detail carefully, like an old European portrait.
In 1930, it won a bronze medal and 300 dollars at a show at the Art Institute, and the museum bought it. It became famous through newspapers. It has been copied and joked about countless times in ads, cartoons and movies. The real house still stands and is now a tourist spot.
A man and a woman stand in front of a house. The man holds a big fork for hay. They look very serious. The woman was the painter's sister. The man was his dentist!
Most people think they are a farmer and his wife. But Nan, the model, always said they were a father and his daughter. In real life, Nan was 31 and the dentist was 62.
In the painting, they stand shoulder to shoulder. But Wood painted Nan and McKeeby separately. The two models never stood together for the picture.
The shape of the three-pronged pitchfork appears again and again: in the stitching on the man's overalls, in the pointed window, and even in the man's long face. The whole picture repeats the fork.
On January 1, 2026, many American works from 1930 entered the public domain. But according to Duke University's public domain center, this painting was not on the list. Its copyright was never renewed, so it was already public domain in 1958!
