中国の東晋の時代、今の江蘇省無錫の名家に生まれた画家です。人物画の名人で、見た目だけでなく、その人の心や人がらまで描き出すことを大切にしました。絵について書いた文章も残し、中国絵画の祖の一人とされます。ただし本人の絵は残っておらず、《女史箴図》や《洛神賦図》は、のちの時代に写された模本と考えられています。
Gu Kaizhi was a painter of the Eastern Jin dynasty, born to a leading family in Wuxi, in today's Jiangsu Province. A master of portraits, he tried to show not only how people looked but also their spirit and character. He also wrote about painting and is seen as one of the founders of Chinese painting. But none of his own works survive. The Admonitions Scroll and the Nymph of the Luo River are thought to be copies made later.
