Story

A she-wolf stands alert, with her ears up and her teeth showing. Under her, two babies look up to drink her milk. In the legend of how Rome began, the twins Romulus and Remus were left in a river and raised by a wolf. Later, Romulus founded the city of Rome. This bronze statue shows that legend and is a symbol of Rome.

For a long time, the wolf was thought to be made by the Etruscans, people who lived in Italy before the Romans, in the 5th century BC. The twins, however, were added in the late 15th century. In 1471, Pope Sixtus IV gave ancient bronze statues to the people of Rome, and the wolf was moved to the Capitoline Hill, where the museum is now.

The statue became the best-known symbol of Rome. It appears on the badge of the football club AS Roma and on the emblem of the 1960 Rome Olympics. Copies were sent around the world. In the city of Rome, Georgia, in the United States, there is a copy that Italy gave in 1929.
