A gold mask weighing over 10 kg! The face of a boy king who slept for more than 3,000 years.
This gold mask covered the mummy of Tutankhamun, a king of ancient Egypt. It is 54 cm tall and weighs about 10 kg. Blue lapis lazuli, red carnelian and coloured glass are set into the gold. The king died at about 18 or 19 and was buried around 1323 BC.
In 1922, the British archaeologist Howard Carter found the king's tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Ancient robbers had broken in, but many treasures were still there. The mask was found on the mummy in 1925. On the forehead are a vulture and a cobra, goddesses of Upper and Lower Egypt. The striped headcloth is called a 'nemes'.
For many years, the mask was shown at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and people came from all over the world. In 2025, it moved to the new Grand Egyptian Museum near the pyramids of Giza. This image is an old photo of the mask in its display case, colored by hand. It was taken when the beard was still kept apart, in front of the mask.
This is a gold mask. It is for a young king of Egypt. His name is Tutankhamun. He died at about 18. In 2014, the beard came off, and someone used glue!
The beard was already loose when the mask was found, and it was attached in 1941. In 2014, it came off again during work on the display case, and staff glued it back with strong glue. This caused a scandal. In 2015, German and Egyptian experts fixed it properly.
Lord Carnarvon, who paid for the dig, died in 1923. Newspapers wrote about the 'curse of the pharaoh'. But Howard Carter, who found the tomb, lived for nearly 16 more years. The curse is only a legend.
Look closely: there are holes in the earlobes. In ancient Egypt, important men and women wore earrings. Tutankhamun's mummy also had pierced ears.
A spell from the Book of the Dead is carved on the back and shoulders. It links parts of the mask to the gods and asks them to protect the king. Even the back works as a charm.
