Story

A shining face of a man with a beard. This is a gold death mask found in a tomb at Mycenae, an ancient city in southern Greece. It was discovered in 1876 by Heinrich Schliemann, a German-born businessman and archaeologist. Today it is a star of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

Schliemann is famous for believing that Homer's Iliad was real history and for digging at the site of Troy. At Mycenae, he was looking for the tomb of Agamemnon, the king who led the Greeks in the story. The mask was made by hammering a thin sheet of gold from behind. The holes at the sides were probably for tying it onto the face.

Schliemann believed it was the face of Agamemnon. But later research showed that the tomb dates from about 1550 to 1500 BC, around 300 years before the time usually given for the Trojan War. Still, the name 'Mask of Agamemnon' stayed, and it is one of the great treasures of ancient Greece.

This is a gold mask. It is about 3,500 years old. People placed it over a dead man's face. A man named Schliemann found it in 1876. He thought it was King Agamemnon, but he was wrong.
