Three meters of wild America! This painting was once glued to a wall!?
Snowy peaks, light breaking through the clouds, and a quiet lake with a waterfall. A group of deer gathers at the water's edge. Albert Bierstadt became very popular for painting the grand nature of the American West. This huge painting is more than three meters wide and shows the feeling of California's Sierra Nevada mountains.
Bierstadt traveled in the West in 1863 and made many sketches. About four years later, in the winter of 1867–68, he finished this painting in his studio in Rome. It is not an exact copy of one place. He combined mountains and lakes he had seen and added dramatic light. It looks like a perfect scene on a theater stage.
The painting was shown in London, Berlin, Paris and other European cities, and it won a gold medal in Berlin. It is said that it made some Europeans interested in moving to America. Later it hung in a private home, and in the 1970s it was left to the Smithsonian.

In 1941, when the owner's house was built, the painting was taken out of its frame and glued right onto a wall. After it came to the Smithsonian, conservators spent about 600 hours restoring it and put it back in its original frame.
In the water near the rocks at the bottom left, there is one trout. It is so small that you can only see it up close. It is a fun treasure hunt at the museum!
On his 1863 trip, Bierstadt named a mountain in Colorado 'Mount Rosalie' after Rosalie, the wife of his travel friend. Later she divorced her husband and married Bierstadt. The mountain was renamed later and is now called Mount Blue Sky.
Bierstadt was born in Solingen, Germany. His family moved to America when he was a baby, and he later studied painting in Düsseldorf. In Colorado, there is even a mountain named Mount Bierstadt.
