Story

On the night of 25 December 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, George Washington led his army across the icy Delaware River. The next morning, they made a surprise attack at Trenton and won. Here, Washington stands in a small boat and looks ahead, while his men row and push away the ice.

The painter, Emanuel Leutze, was born in Germany and grew up in America. He painted it in Düsseldorf, Germany, so the river is based on the Rhine. American tourists and art students helped as models. His friend Worthington Whittredge posed for both Washington and the man steering the boat.

When it was shown in New York in 1851, more than 50,000 people came to see it, and it was reportedly sold for $10,000. It was given to the Met in 1897 and is still one of the museum's star pieces. But many details are not historically correct: the real crossing was in the middle of the night, and the boats were much bigger.

It is a cold winter night. George Washington and his soldiers cross a river. There is ice in the water. Washington stands in the boat. But look at the flag. It did not exist yet!
