On the night of 25 December 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, George Washington led his army across the icy Delaware River. The next morning, they made a surprise attack at Trenton and won. Here, Washington stands in a small boat and looks ahead, while his men row and push away the ice.

🦉 Fun Fact! Leutze's first version was damaged by a fire in his studio. After repairs, it went to the Kunsthalle in Bremen, Germany. In 1942, it was destroyed in a bombing raid in World War II. The Met's painting is the second version.

第1作は戦争で焼けてしまった ロイツェが最初に描いた版はアトリエの火事で傷つき、修復されてドイツのブレーメン美術館に入りました。しかし1942年、第二次世界大戦の空襲で焼けてしまいました。メトロポリタンのものは2作目です。
