ドイツ南部のシュヴェービッシュ・グミュントに生まれ、子どものころ家族とアメリカのフィラデルフィアへ移住しました。のちにドイツのデュッセルドルフへもどって絵を学び、歴史画家として活躍します。代表作『デラウェア川を渡るワシントン』は、アメリカ独立戦争の名場面を描いた縦約3.8メートル、横約6.5メートルの大作で、アメリカで最も有名な絵の一つです。
Leutze was born in Schwäbisch Gmünd, southern Germany, and moved to Philadelphia with his family as a child. Later, he went back to Düsseldorf, Germany, to study and became a history painter. His masterpiece, Washington Crossing the Delaware, shows a famous moment in the American Revolution. It is about 3.8 meters tall and 6.5 meters wide, and is one of the best-known paintings in America.
