Snowy peaks, light breaking through the clouds, and a quiet lake with a waterfall. A group of deer gathers at the water's edge. Albert Bierstadt became very popular for painting the grand nature of the American West. This huge painting is more than three meters wide and shows the feeling of California's Sierra Nevada mountains.

🦉 Fun Fact! In 1941, when the owner's house was built, the painting was taken out of its frame and glued right onto a wall. After it came to the Smithsonian, conservators spent about 600 hours restoring it and put it back in its original frame.
