Story

A young man grabs his hair with both hands and stares at us with wide eyes. He looks ready to scream. This is a self-portrait by Gustave Courbet, who later became the leader of Realism. He painted it in his mid-twenties, around 1844–45, soon after he came to Paris from his hometown of Ornans.

Portraits are usually tall, but Courbet chose a wide canvas and brought his face very close to us. He studied Spanish painters at the Louvre and learned how to show strong feelings. We do not know if he was really in despair, or if he was just practicing an expression.

Courbet kept this painting all his life. He still had it when he fled to Switzerland in 1873 for political reasons. For a long time it was in a private collection and was rarely shown. In 2025, it was announced that Qatar Museums had bought it from a private owner. It is now on long-term loan to the Musée d'Orsay and will later be shown in Doha.

A young man holds his head with both hands. His eyes are very big. Who is he? He is the painter, Courbet! He painted his own face. He kept this picture for his whole life.
