A horse races through the sky, its head turned a little and its tail flying. Three of its legs are in the air, and the fourth steps on the back of a flying bird. This bronze statue was made about 1,800 to 1,900 years ago, in China's Eastern Han dynasty. It is 34.5 cm tall. In Chinese it is widely known as 'Ma Ta Fei Yan' (horse treading on a flying swallow), but its official name is 'Tong Ben Ma' (bronze galloping horse).
In the Han dynasty, good horses were treasures that could decide the power of the country. Wuwei, where this statue was found, is a town on the Hexi Corridor, a route of the Silk Road. The whole weight rests on one leg standing on the bird, so the balance was carefully planned. The bird works as a base.
In 1969, farmers digging an air-raid shelter at Leitai in Wuwei found an old tomb, and this horse came out of it. Later it became a symbol of tourism in China. Today it is one of the national treasures that are not allowed to leave China for exhibitions.

In 1969, farmers in Wuwei were digging an air-raid shelter when they found an Eastern Han tomb by chance. Along with this horse, they found many other bronze horses, carriages and figures.
The name 'flying swallow' was given after the statue was found. Some scholars think the bird is not a swallow but another bird, or a legendary bird linked to the wind god. Its true identity is still debated.
