- 年中行事必修 バレンタインデーvalentinethe day women give chocolate, and the day men return it 女性が男性にチョコを贈る国。しかも1か月後にお返しの日がある。
- 食べもの必修 しゃぶしゃぶshabu-shabubeef swished in hot broth 名前は音から来ている。鍋で肉を振る「しゃぶしゃぶ」という音。
- 食べもの必修 すき焼きsukiyakibeef simmered at the table 生卵につけて食べる。理由は、熱を冷ますためでもある。
- 現代の暮らし必修 花粉症kafunshohay fever, mostly from cedar pollen 春にマスクの人が増えるのは、風邪ではない。戦後に植えた杉が原因。
- 着物標準 半纏hantenthe padded winter jacket worn at home 家が寒いから生まれた上着。こたつと組み合わせると無敵。
- 年中行事標準 さっぽろ雪まつりSapporo Snow Festivalthe February festival of giant snow sculptures in Sapporo 始まりは1950年、中高生が公園の雪捨て場に作った六つの雪像。
- 年中行事標準 寒中見舞いkanchu mimaithe midwinter greeting card 年賀状を出しそびれたとき、喪中の人へ返すとき。一月半ばからの静かな便り。
- 年中行事標準 建国記念の日kenkoku kinen no hiNational Foundation Day, February 11th 「建国記念日」ではなく「建国記念の日」。この「の」一文字に、長い議論が詰まっている。
- 年中行事標準 節分setsubunthe bean-throwing festival at the start of spring 父親が鬼の面をかぶり、家族が豆を投げる。2月3日、日本中の家でこれが起きている。
- 年中行事標準 天皇誕生日tenno tanjobithe Emperor's Birthday, a holiday whose date changes with the reign 日本でただひとつ、代替わりで日付が変わる祝日。いまは2月23日。
- 食べもの標準 おでんodena winter stew of fish cakes, daikon and eggs コンビニのレジ横で湯気を上げるあれ。何が入っているのか外国人には謎。

- 年中行事応用 初午hatsuumathe February day for the fox shrines 二月最初の午の日、稲荷神社に赤い幟が並ぶ。狐といなり寿司の日。
- 年中行事応用 針供養hari kuyoa memorial service for broken needles 折れた針を豆腐に刺して供養する。道具にも礼を尽くす、という感覚が形になった行事。
- 妖怪応用 雪女yuki-onnathe snow woman 美しく、白く、話しかけてくる。そして息を吹きかけて凍らせる。
- 仕事応用 春闘shuntothe spring wage round 毎年春、労使が一斉に賃金を決める日本独特の仕組み。
