Yukimiburo is a hot spring bath with a view of the snow, usually in a rotenburo, or outdoor bath. Your body stays warm in the water while snow falls on your head and the trees around you turn white. It's one of the main reasons people visit hot spring towns in snowy areas in winter. Just walk carefully, because the paths and stones around the bath can be icy.

Yukimiburo literally means "snow-viewing bath," and it's one of the best things to do in Japan in winter. You sit in a rotenburo, or outdoor hot spring bath, while snow falls around you. The water is hot, the air is freezing, and the contrast is the whole point.
Your shoulders stay warm under the water, snowflakes land on your hair, and the trees and rocks around the bath slowly turn white. Many hot spring towns in snowy regions, from Hokkaido and Tohoku to the mountains of central Japan, promote winter stays for exactly this reason.
In Nagano, there's even a famous park where wild monkeys sit in a hot spring in the snow. A few tips help. Walk slowly, because the stones can be icy. Don't stay in too long, because it's easy to overheat without noticing. And dry off and get dressed quickly afterward. For me, a snowy night in an outdoor bath is the quietest moment of the whole year.

It is cold for a moment, but your body stays warm for a while after a hot spring soak. Most outdoor baths are right next to an indoor changing room. Just dry off quickly and get dressed.
Can I put my towel on my head?
Yes, many people do. It keeps your head warm and the towel out of the water, which is good manners. Just don't put the towel in the bath itself.
