Japan sits on a volcanic chain, so hot mineral water comes out of the ground almost everywhere. An onsen is a bath filled with that water. Baths are separated by sex, and you bathe naked; swimsuits are not worn and are usually not allowed. You wash thoroughly at a low shower before entering, because the bath water is shared and never drained between people.

Japan has thousands of hot springs, because the whole country sits along a volcanic chain. An onsen is a bath filled with that naturally heated mineral water, and going to one is a normal weekend thing to do, not a luxury. Here is the part that stops most visitors: you bathe naked.
Baths are separated by men and women, and swimsuits are not worn. Before you get in, you sit on a small stool at a low shower and wash yourself completely, because everyone shares the same water and it is not drained between people.
Once you are in, you do not swim, splash or put your towel in the water. What surprises people is how quickly the awkwardness disappears. Nobody looks at anybody. After about ten minutes you stop thinking about it entirely, and then you understand why we keep going back.
日本には何千もの温泉があります。国全体が火山帯に沿っているからです。温泉はその天然の湯を張った風呂で、行くことは贅沢ではなく、週末の普通の過ごし方です。ここで多くの方が止まります。
裸で入るのです。浴場は男女で分かれ、水着は着ません。入る前に小さな椅子に座り、低いシャワーで体を完全に洗います。全員が同じ湯を使い、人ごとに入れ替えないからです。

QDo I really have to be naked?
本当に裸にならないといけませんか。
Yes, in almost all of them. Swimsuits carry detergent and outside dirt into shared water, which is the stated reason. If you cannot do it, look for a private family bath, called kashikiri, which many places rent by the hour.
ほぼすべての施設でそうです。水着は洗剤や外の汚れを共有の湯に持ち込む、というのが表向きの理由です。どうしても無理なら、多くの施設が時間貸ししている「貸切風呂」を探してください。
QWhat do I do with the small towel?
小さいタオルはどうすればいいですか。
Use it to wash, then either leave it at the side or fold it and put it on your head. It must not go into the bath water. You dry off with it before going back to the changing room.
体を洗うのに使い、そのあとは湯船の縁に置くか、畳んで頭にのせます。湯には入れません。脱衣所に戻る前に、それで体を拭きます。
QHow hot is it, really?
実際、どれくらい熱いのですか。
Often 40 to 43 degrees, which is hotter than most people expect. Get in slowly, and get out if you feel light-headed. Ten minutes is plenty for a first time.
40〜43度が多く、多くの人の予想より熱いです。ゆっくり入り、のぼせそうなら出てください。初めてなら10分で十分です。

FACTFor most Japanese people it is ordinary. A day trip to a local hot spring costs a few hundred yen, and towns build their whole life around one.
多くの日本人にとっては日常です。近所の温泉なら日帰り数百円で、町ごと温泉を中心に成り立っている地域もあります。

日本の温泉法では、源泉の温度が25度以上、または定められた成分を一定量含むものを温泉と定義している。したがって「温泉」を名乗る湯が必ずしも熱いとは限らない。環境省の統計では源泉総数は2万7千を超え、全国の温泉地は約3千か所。泉質は単純温泉、塩化物泉、硫黄泉など複数に分類され、浴場には泉質と効能を示す掲示が義務づけられている。湯船の湯を入れ替えず、源泉を流し続ける方式を「源泉かけ流し」と呼ぶ。なお「秘湯」は山奥の素朴な温泉を指す言葉で、正式な分類ではない。
