Nehan-e is a Buddhist service held to remember the death of the Buddha. Buddhists don't simply call it his death. They say he entered nirvana, a state of complete peace, free from the cycle of rebirth.
In Japan, many temples hold the service on February 15th, which is the traditional date, while others hold it on March 15th, about a month later, closer to the timing of the old lunar calendar. The highlight is a large hanging scroll called a nehan-zu. It shows the Buddha lying on his right side between sal trees, with his disciples weeping around him.
What surprises many people is that animals are there too, from elephants and tigers to birds and insects, all mourning him. Many temples only bring out this painting once a year, so the service is a rare chance to see it. Along with Hanamatsuri, which celebrates the Buddha's birthday on April 8th, it's an important day in the Buddhist calendar.
涅槃会は、お釈迦さまの死をしのんで行う仏教の法要です。仏教では、これを単に「亡くなった」とは言いません。生まれ変わりをくり返す輪から抜け出し、完全な安らぎの境地である涅槃に入った、と言います。
日本では、伝統的な日付である2月15日に行う寺が多く、昔の旧暦の時期に近い、ひと月ほど遅れた3月15日に行う寺もあります。いちばんの見どころは、涅槃図と呼ばれる大きな掛け軸です。沙羅の木の間で右脇を下にして横たわるお釈迦さまと、そのまわりで泣く弟子たちが描かれています。
多くの人が驚くのは、そこに動物たちもいることです。象や虎から鳥や虫まで、みなお釈迦さまの死を悲しんでいます。この絵を年に一度しか出さない寺も多いので、法要はそれを見られる貴重な機会です。4月8日にお釈迦さまの誕生を祝う花まつりとともに、仏教の暦の中で大切な日になっています。

The date February 15th comes from the old lunar calendar. Some temples hold it a month later, on March 15th, so that the season is closer to the original timing.
2月15日という日付は、昔の旧暦のものです。季節を元の時期に近づけるため、ひと月遅れの3月15日に行う寺もあります。
Why are there animals in the painting?
なぜ絵に動物がいるのですか。
They show that all living things, not just people, were sad when the Buddha died. Looking for the different animals is one of the fun parts of viewing a nehan-zu.
人だけでなく、生きとし生けるものすべてがお釈迦さまの死を悲しんだことを表しています。いろいろな動物を探すのも、涅槃図を見る楽しみの一つです。
Can tourists attend the service?
観光客も法要に参加できますか。
It depends on the temple. Some temples welcome visitors and display the painting for several days, but it's best to check the temple's own information first.
寺によります。参拝者を受け入れ、何日か絵を公開する寺もありますが、まずその寺の案内を確かめるのがいちばんです。
