Zen is a school of Buddhism whose name traces back through Chinese chan to a Sanskrit word for meditation, and that name tells you what it emphasizes. The central practice is zazen, sitting still in a fixed posture with attention on the breath. Zen came to Japan from China in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and two branches took root: Rinzai, which gives students paradoxical questions to work on until ordinary reasoning fails, and Soto, which teaches sitting without a goal, since the sitting itself is the practice.
Because Zen temples were supported by the warrior class, the school shaped a great deal of Japanese culture: tea ceremony, dry gardens, ink painting, and the idea that everyday tasks done attentively are practice. The English word zen has drifted a long way from this, toward calmness and minimalism, and a Japanese Zen priest would not recognize most of what is sold under the name.
禅は仏教の一派で、その名は中国の禅を経て、瞑想を意味するサンスクリットの語にさかのぼります。名がそのまま重んじるものを示しています。中心となる修行は坐禅で、決まった姿勢でじっと坐り、息に意識を向けます。禅は12世紀から13世紀に中国から日本に伝わり、二つの流れが根づきました。
臨済宗は、ふつうの理屈が行き詰まるまで取り組む逆説的な問いを修行者に与えます。曹洞宗は、目的を立てずに坐ることを説きます。坐ること自体が修行だからです。禅寺は武家に支えられたため、この一派は日本の文化を広く形づくりました。
茶の湯、枯山水、水墨画、そして日々の仕事を心をこめて行うことが修行であるという考え方です。英語の zen はここから大きく離れ、静けさや簡素さの意味に傾きました。その名で売られているものの多くを、日本の禅僧は自分たちのものと認めないでしょう。

Yes. Many temples run open sessions, often early in the morning, sometimes with English guidance. You will be shown the posture, the breathing and how the session is timed, and sitting for twenty or thirty minutes is normal for a first visit.
できます。多くの寺が一般向けの坐禅会を開いていて、早朝が多く、英語の案内があるところもあります。姿勢、呼吸、時間の区切り方を教わり、初めてなら二十分か三十分坐るのがふつうです。

本当に棒で人を打つのですか。
A flat wooden stick is used in some halls, but it is not punishment. A sitter who wants it bows to request it, and it is a sharp tap on the shoulder to break drowsiness or tension. You will not be struck without asking.
平たい木の板を使う道場はありますが、罰ではありません。受けたい人が礼をして頼み、眠気や強張りを断つために肩を打ちます。求めていない人が打たれることはありません。
QIs Zen the main form of Buddhism in Japan?
禅は日本の仏教の主流なのですか。
No. Japanese Buddhism has many schools, and Pure Land traditions have far more adherents by household affiliation. Zen is influential culturally and well known abroad, which makes it look larger than it is.
違います。日本の仏教には多くの宗派があり、檀家の数で言えば浄土系のほうがはるかに多くあります。禅は文化への影響が大きく、海外でよく知られているため、実際より大きく見えるのです。
誤解されやすい
MYTHZen means being calm and minimal.
禅は落ち着きと簡素さのことだと思われがちです。
FACTIt is a Buddhist school with ordination, liturgy, precepts and long training. The English sense of calm simplicity is a later borrowing that dropped most of the religion.
実際には出家も法要も戒律も長い修行もある仏教の一派です。英語の静かで簡素という意味は後の借用で、宗教の部分をほとんど落としています。

日本には臨済宗、曹洞宗、黄檗宗の三つの禅宗があります。臨済宗を伝えたのは栄西、曹洞宗を伝えたのは道元とされ、道元の『正法眼蔵』は今も読まれています。禅寺の日課には掃除や食事の作法も含まれ、それ自体が修行とされます。精進料理や茶の湯、水墨画は禅寺を通じて発展しました。英語の zen が形容詞的に使われるようになったのは20世紀の紹介を経てのことで、日本語の用法とは重なりません。
