In the tea ceremony, a host prepares powdered green tea for a small number of guests, following a precise sequence of movements. Everything is regulated: the placement of utensils, the order of actions, the scroll and flowers in the alcove. It is not about the taste of the tea. It is a practice in attention, and in treating one gathering as unrepeatable.

The tea ceremony is often described as a ritual for drinking tea, which is accurate but misses the point. A host prepares powdered green tea for a few guests, following a fixed sequence: every movement, the angle at which the bowl is turned, where each utensil is placed. Guests also have a role, including what to say and how to handle the bowl.

The room is small and deliberately plain, with one scroll and one flower arrangement chosen for that day. The phrase people quote is ichigo ichie, one time, one meeting: this particular gathering, with these people, on this day, will never happen again, so it deserves your full attention.

Studying tea takes years, and practitioners will tell you they are still learning basic things after decades. If you get the chance to attend a short session for visitors, take it. The tea is bitter, and you are supposed to eat the sweet first.

QWhy do you turn the bowl before drinking?

The bowl has a front, the most attractive face, which the host turns toward you. Turning it away before drinking is a way of declining to put your lips on the best part.

QDo I have to sit on my knees the whole time?

In a formal setting the seiza position is standard, and it is painful if you are not used to it. Say so in advance; most hosts will offer a stool or let you sit differently.

QIs it a Zen practice?

Closely connected. Tea came to Japan with Zen monks, and the aesthetic was shaped by Zen ideas of simplicity and attention. But tea is a discipline in its own right, not a form of Buddhist worship.
