Go is worth explaining to anyone who likes chess, because the two games are opposites in an interesting way. In chess you start with all your pieces and lose them; in go you start with an empty board and add stones, and the board fills up.
Players alternate placing black and white stones on the intersections of a nineteen by nineteen grid, and the aim is to enclose more territory than your opponent. A stone or group is captured only when it has no adjacent empty point left. That is almost the whole rulebook, and the game that comes out of it is deep enough that professional players spend a lifetime on it.
It reached Japan from China well over a thousand years ago and was organized into schools under the Edo shogunate, which is where the professional system and the ranking in dan grew from. In 2016 a computer program defeated one of the world's strongest players, a result that had been expected to take much longer, and the professional game has absorbed the lessons from it since.
囲碁は、チェスが好きな人に説明する値打ちがあります。二つの遊びは、面白い形で正反対だからです。チェスは駒がそろった状態から始まり、失っていきます。囲碁は空の盤から始めて石を足していき、盤は埋まっていきます。

千年以上前に中国から日本へ伝わり、江戸幕府のもとで家元の制度に整えられました。今の専業の仕組みと段位は、ここから育っています。2016年には、計算機のプログラムが世界でも指折りの棋士に勝ちました。もっと先のことだと見られていた結果で、以来、専業の世界はそこから学んだことを取り込んできました。

チェスより難しいですか。
The rules are far simpler and the board is far larger, so the number of possible positions is vastly greater. Whether that makes it harder depends on what you find difficult, but it resists calculation more.
決まりははるかに単純で、盤はずっと広いので、起こりうる局面の数は比べものになりません。それを難しいと感じるかどうかは人によりますが、計算では割り切りにくい遊びです。

Yes, and this is one of the game's best features. The weaker player places handicap stones before the game starts, so an even, interesting contest is possible across a wide gap in strength.

Go salons exist in most cities and welcome visitors for an hourly fee, and many will find you an opponent. Some community centers run free sessions, and boards are often available at hot spring inns.
碁会所はたいていの街にあり、時間で料金を払えば入れて、相手を探してくれるところも多いです。公民館で無料の集まりを開いている地域もあり、温泉旅館には碁盤が置いてあることもよくあります。

盤は十九路が標準ですが、覚えるときは九路や十三路の小さな盤を使います。石は黒が181個、白が180個で、黒が先に打つぶん、白に約束の目数を足して調整します。江戸時代には幕府のもとで家元が置かれ、将軍の前で対局する御城碁が行われました。段位や級の仕組みはここから続いています。2016年に計算機のプログラムが世界屈指の棋士に勝ち、それ以降、定石の考え方そのものが見直される場面も出ています。日本棋院などが普及と対局の運営を担っています。
