Bonsai means tray planting. An ordinary tree species is kept small by pruning its branches and roots, shaping it with wire, and growing it in a shallow pot. 盆栽は「盆に植える」という意味です。ふつうの樹種を、枝と根を剪定し、針金で形を整え、浅い鉢で育てることで小さく保ちます。矮性の品種でも観葉植物でもありません。盆栽の多くは屋外の木で、本物の季節の変化が必要です。何百年も受け継がれてきた木もあります。

Bonsai means tray planting, and the first thing to correct is that there is no such thing as a bonsai species. A bonsai is an ordinary pine, maple or juniper kept small by technique: the branches are pruned, the roots are cut back when it is repotted, and wire is wound around the branches to set their direction over months.
The goal is not simply small. It is to suggest an old tree standing in a landscape, so growers work on the taper of the trunk, the exposed roots and the empty space between branches. Most bonsai are outdoor trees and will die indoors, which catches out a lot of people given one as a gift.
The other thing worth knowing is the timescale. Trees are handed down through families and between growers, some are documented for several hundred years, and a serious bonsai is less something you own than something you look after for a while.
盆栽は「盆に植える」という意味で、まず正しておきたいのは、盆栽という樹種は存在しないということです。盆栽とは、ふつうの松や楓や杜松を、技術によって小さく保ったものです。枝を剪定し、植え替えのときに根を切り詰め、枝に針金を巻いて何か月もかけて向きを定めます。
目指すのは、ただ小さいことではありません。風景の中に立つ老木を思わせることです。だから作り手は幹の先細り、露出した根、枝と枝の間の空白に手をかけます。盆栽の多くは屋外の木で、室内では枯れます。
贈り物として受け取った人が、ここでよくつまずきます。もうひとつ知っておくとよいのは、時間の尺度です。木は家や作り手の間で受け継がれ、数百年の記録が残るものもあります。本格的な盆栽は、所有するものというより、しばらく預かって世話をするものです。

自分の部屋で育てられますか。
Most species, no. Pines, maples and junipers need outdoor conditions including winter cold, and they decline quickly indoors. A few tropical species such as ficus can live inside, so ask which one you have before deciding where to put it.
多くの樹種では無理です。松、楓、杜松は冬の寒さを含む屋外の環境が必要で、室内では急速に弱ります。ガジュマルなど一部の熱帯の樹種は室内で育ちますから、置き場所を決める前に何の木か確かめてください。

Growers would say it is intensive care rather than harm. The tree is watered daily, fed, repotted and treated for pests, and well-kept bonsai often outlive the same species growing wild. Bad practice certainly can kill a tree.
作り手は、虐げるのではなく手厚く世話をすることだと言います。毎日水をやり、肥料を与え、植え替え、害虫の手当てをします。よく手入れされた盆栽は、同じ樹種の自生のものより長く生きることも珍しくありません。もちろん扱いを誤れば木は枯れます。
