Rooms are measured in mats, so a six-mat room is a standard size and estate agents still list rooms that way, even carpeted ones. You sit and sleep directly on tatami, so shoes and slippers never touch it, and you do not drag furniture across it.

Tatami are the thick woven mats used as flooring in traditional Japanese rooms. Each one is about ninety by one hundred and eighty centimeters, and rooms are measured by how many fit, so a six-mat room is a standard small bedroom. Even modern flats with wooden floors are still advertised in mats.
The reason this matters is that tatami is not just a floor covering. You sit on it directly, and at night you lay a futon on it and sleep on it. That is why no shoes ever touch it, and why you take off even indoor slippers at the edge.
You also do not drag furniture across it, and you try not to step on the cloth border along the edge, which is a traditional courtesy. New tatami has a strong green smell of rush grass, and a lot of Japanese people will tell you it is one of their favorite smells.
畳は、日本の伝統的な部屋に敷かれる厚い織りの床材です。一枚がおよそ90×180センチで、部屋の広さは何枚敷けるかで表します。六畳間といえば標準的な小さめの一室です。今の木の床のマンションでさえ、広告は畳数で書かれます。
これが重要なのは、畳が単なる床の覆いではないからです。その上に直接座り、夜は布団を敷いてその上で寝ます。だから靴は一切上げませんし、室内用のスリッパも畳の手前で脱ぎます。
家具を引きずることもしませんし、縁（へり）を踏まないようにするのが昔からの作法です。新しい畳はい草の強い青い香りがして、日本人にはこれが一番好きな匂いだという人が大勢います。

どうして縁を踏んではいけないのですか。
It is the most easily damaged part, and historically the border showed the household's rank, so stepping on it was disrespectful. Today it is a small courtesy rather than a rule anyone enforces.
縁はいちばん傷みやすい部分で、かつては家の格式を示す部分でもあったため、踏むのは無礼とされました。今は誰かが咎める規則ではなく、小さな心遣いです。
QAre tatami all the same size?
畳はどれも同じ大きさですか。
No, and this surprises Japanese people too. Kyoto-size mats are noticeably larger than Tokyo-size ones, so a six-mat room in Kyoto is bigger than a six-mat room in Tokyo.
違います。これは日本人も驚きます。京間の畳は江戸間よりはっきり大きく、京都の六畳は東京の六畳より広いのです。
QDo people still have tatami rooms?
いまも畳の部屋はあるのですか。
Fewer than before, but most family homes keep at least one, often used for guests, for a Buddhist altar, or simply as the room where you lie down. Purely Western-style homes are common now.

畳の大きさは地域で異なり、京間（本間）は約191×95.5cm、中京間は約182×91cm、江戸間（関東間）は約176×88cmと、京間と江戸間では一畳あたり約2割の差がある。不動産公正取引協議会の規約では、1畳を1.62平方メートル以上として表示することと定められている。畳表はい草を織ったもので、通常は数年で裏返し、さらに数年で表替えをして使い続ける。畳の敷き方には「祝儀敷き」と、四枚の角が一点に集まる「不祝儀敷き」があり、後者は葬儀の際に用いられる。近年は和紙や樹脂を使った畳表、縁のない「琉球畳」も広く使われている。
