Osoji is the year-end clean, and it is far more thorough than a normal tidy-up. In the last days of December, households take everything apart: windows washed, the extractor fan over the stove degreased, cupboards emptied, the tops of doorframes wiped, the bath drain scrubbed.
Schools and offices do the same before closing for the holiday. The stated reason is that you should not carry the dirt of the old year into the new one, and behind that is the older idea of purifying the house so that the deity of the incoming year can be received.
Temples and shrines do a formal version, and the traditional date for starting it is the thirteenth of December. There is a practical consequence worth knowing: in late December, home improvement shops are full of cleaning products, rubbish collection schedules change for the holiday, and large items must be booked for disposal well in advance.
