In Japan, Valentine's Day is when women give chocolate. White Day, a month later on March 14, is when men return the favor, usually with candy, marshmallows or white chocolate. It was created by the Japanese confectionery industry around 1980 and has no Western original. It spread from Japan to South Korea, Taiwan and China.

White Day is a good example of something Japan is often assumed to have imported but actually invented. In most countries Valentine's Day is one day and both sides give. In Japan the custom that took hold was that women give chocolate to men, which left the confectionery industry an obvious opening: a second day, a month later, for the men to give something back.
That is White Day, March the fourteenth, promoted by the Japanese confectionery association from around 1980, and the name comes from the white of marshmallow and sugar. Because it was designed as a return gift, an etiquette grew around it that the return should be worth more than what was received, sometimes stated as two or three times, which is marketing rather than rule, and which working women will tell you is exhausting when the original chocolate was obligation chocolate given to a whole office.
The custom traveled: South Korea, Taiwan and China observe it. Recently many Japanese workplaces have dropped office chocolate altogether, and with it the return obligation, so the day is quieter than it was.
ホワイトデーは、輸入されたものと思われがちだが実は日本製、という良い例です。多くの国ではバレンタインデーは一日で、贈るのはどちらからでもよい。ところが日本では、1950年代から60年代にかけて、女性が男性にチョコレートを贈る形が定着しました。菓子業界にとっては分かりやすい好機です。
一月後にもう一日作り、男性が返せばよい。それが三月十四日のホワイトデーで、1980年ごろから全国飴菓子工業協同組合などが広めました。名前はマシュマロや砂糖の白さから来ています。お返しとして設計されたため、もらったものより高いものを返すべきだという作法が生まれ、三倍返しなどと言われます。
決まりではなく宣伝文句ですが、義理チョコを職場全体からもらった人にとっては負担でした。この習慣は広がり、韓国、台湾、中国にもあります。韓国では何ももらえなかった人のために四月に三つ目の日を作りました。近年は職場のチョコそのものをやめる会社が増え、お返しの義務も薄れて、以前より静かな日になっています。

ホワイトデーの始まりには複数の説があり、福岡の菓子店がマシュマロを贈る日として始めたとする説と、全国飴菓子工業協同組合がキャンデーを贈る日として1980年に始めたとする説がよく挙げられる。いずれにせよ日本発祥である点は共通している。韓国には何も贈られなかった人が黒い麺を食べるブラックデー（四月十四日）があり、これは韓国で生まれたものである。
