Obon is a Buddhist custom held in the middle of August. For a few days, the spirits of the family's ancestors are said to come back to the house. Families clean the grave, light a small fire at the entrance so the spirits can find their way, and put food and flowers on the household altar.
On the last evening, another fire or a floating lantern sends them back. Because almost every company closes for Obon, millions of people travel to their hometowns at the same time, and the trains and highways are packed.
I think what matters about Obon is not whether you believe the spirits really come. It is that once a year, the whole family goes back to the same place and remembers the same people.
お盆は8月中旬に行われる仏教由来の習慣です。数日間、先祖の霊が家に帰ってくるとされます。家族は墓を掃除し、霊が道に迷わないよう玄関先で小さな火をたき、仏壇に食べ物や花を供えます。
最後の晩には、送り火や灯籠流しで霊を送り返します。ほとんどの会社が休むため、何百万人もが同時に帰省し、電車も高速道路も混雑します。
お盆で大事なのは、霊が本当に帰ってくると信じているかどうかではないと思います。年に一度、家族全員が同じ場所に戻り、同じ人たちを思い出す。そこに意味があるのです。

QIs this like Halloween or the Day of the Dead?
ハロウィンや死者の日のようなものですか。
Closer to the Day of the Dead than Halloween. There is nothing scary about it. The dead being nearby is comforting, not frightening, and the tone is quiet and family-centered.
ハロウィンより「死者の日」に近いです。怖い要素はありません。死者が近くにいることは恐ろしくなく、むしろ安心につながり、全体に静かで家族中心の雰囲気です。
QIs Obon a public holiday?
お盆は祝日なのですか。
Officially, no. But most companies and factories shut down for about a week, so in practice it works like one. August 11th, Mountain Day, is the only actual national holiday in that stretch.
公式には祝日ではありません。ただ多くの会社や工場が一週間ほど休むため、実質的には休暇期間です。この時期の正式な祝日は8月11日の山の日だけです。

That is bon odori, a circle dance held in the evening in parks and shrine grounds during Obon. Anyone can join. It started as a dance to welcome and comfort the returning spirits, and today it is mostly a neighborhood summer event.
盆踊りです。お盆の時期に公園や境内で夜に行われる輪になって踊る踊りで、誰でも参加できます。もとは帰ってきた霊を迎え慰める踊りで、今は地域の夏の行事になっています。

お盆の時期が地域で分かれているのは、明治の改暦の影響である。旧暦7月15日を新暦にそのまま移した東京などは7月に、月遅れで行う多くの地域は8月に行う。有名な京都の五山送り火は8月16日で、これはお盆の最終日に霊を送る火である。「精霊馬」といって、きゅうりを馬、なすを牛に見立てて割り箸の脚をつけて供える風習も広く残る。きゅうりの馬は「早く帰ってきてほしい」、なすの牛は「ゆっくり戻ってほしい」という意味だとされる。なお「盆と正月が一緒に来たよう」という言い回しは、大変な忙しさ・めでたさの重なりを表す。
