Japanese families visit the family grave several times a year, especially at the spring and autumn equinoxes and at Obon. You clean the stone, pull the weeds, pour water over the monument, put flowers and incense in place, and put your hands together. Most families share one grave holding the ashes of several generations.

Visiting the family grave is one of the most ordinary religious acts in Japanese life, and almost everyone does it regardless of what they believe. Families go several times a year: at the spring and autumn equinoxes, at Obon in August, and at the anniversary of a death.
What you actually do is practical. You bring a bucket and a ladle, pull the weeds around the plot, scrub the stone, and pour water over the top of it. Then you put fresh flowers in the holders, light incense, and put your hands together for a moment.
Many people speak to the grave, silently or out loud, and tell the family what has happened since last time: a new job, a marriage, a grandchild. Most families share a single grave with the ashes of several generations in it, so you are not visiting one person. You are visiting the household.
QWhy do you pour water over the gravestone?
Partly to clean it, partly as an offering. Water is a basic offering in Buddhism, and in some interpretations it is said to relieve the thirst of the dead. Both explanations are given, and most people do not distinguish.
Usually not. A family grave holds the cremated remains of many generations, and the family name is carved on the stone rather than an individual name. Individual names go on a separate side panel.
QWhat happens if there is nobody left to visit?
This is a growing problem. Graves with no one to tend them are called muen-baka, and with the falling birth rate many families are closing their graves and moving ashes to collective or tree burial sites.
