In Buddhist teaching, beings die and are reborn again and again, in realms determined by their actions. This wheel is called rinne, and the aim is not a better rebirth but release from the cycle altogether. Japanese Buddhism inherited the idea, though many Japanese people today treat rebirth loosely or not at all. Funeral and memorial customs still carry its vocabulary, which is why the word appears at temples and in everyday speech.

Rebirth is one of the ideas most often misunderstood when Buddhism is described in English. Rinne, usually translated as transmigration or the cycle of rebirth, holds that a being dies and is born again, repeatedly, in one of several realms, and that where you land is shaped by your actions. Crucially, this is not presented as a comforting second chance.

The cycle is the problem. Birth brings ageing, sickness and loss, and the goal of early Buddhist practice was to get off the wheel entirely, a release called liberation. Japanese Buddhism inherited this frame, and you can still hear it in the words used at funerals and memorial services, and in the idea of accumulating merit for the dead.

What most Japanese people actually believe today is looser. Surveys and everyday conversation suggest a vague sense that the dead go somewhere and return at the summer festival of the dead, closer to a family memory than to doctrine. Both things are true at once, and it is worth saying so.

QSo being reborn is a bad thing?

In the doctrine, yes. Each rebirth means another round of ageing, illness and separation, so the tradition treats the cycle as suffering to be escaped, not a prize. Popular usage in many countries, including Japan, has softened this into something more like a hopeful second life.

Many would say they are not sure. Belief in a literal wheel of rebirth is not widespread, but the customs around it continue: memorial services on set anniversaries, welcoming the dead home at the summer festival, and prayers for a good passage. Practice and belief do not line up neatly here.

QWhat are the realms people are reborn into?

Classical teaching lists six, including hells, hungry ghosts, animals, humans and heavens, often shown on a painted wheel. Human birth is considered rare and valuable because it is the state from which practice is possible. The six realms appear in temple art and in old Japanese stories.

MYTHBuddhism promises you will be reborn, which is a comforting idea.

FACTClassical Buddhist teaching treats rebirth as the problem rather than the reward, and the aim of practice is release from the cycle, not a better place within it.
