Inga oho means cause and effect with a moral edge: what a person does comes back to them. It comes from Buddhist teaching on karma, but in ordinary Japanese it is used casually, often with a note of satisfaction when someone unpleasant meets trouble. Several related Buddhist terms have followed the same path into daily speech.

因果応報とは、行いには結果が伴うという、道徳の色を帯びた因果の考えです。仏教の業の教えから来ていますが、ふつうの日本語では気軽に使われ、感じの悪い人が困ったときに、いささか痛快そうに口にされることもあります。同じ道をたどって日常語になった仏教語はほかにもあります。

スピーチ・英作文

通訳案内士の二次口述・大学入試の自由英作文に

Inga oho means that causes produce effects and that what a person does returns to them. It comes from Buddhist teaching on karma, where the mechanism is impersonal and can extend across lifetimes, not a judge handing down a sentence. What makes it interesting for a learner is what happened to the vocabulary.

A large number of Buddhist terms have become ordinary Japanese words, and in the process most have shifted. Jigo-jitoku, originally the fruits of one's own actions in a neutral sense, is now used almost exclusively to say someone brought it on themselves.

Innen, meaning the web of causes and conditions, turns up in a phrase for picking a fight. Shujo, all sentient beings, survives in a word meaning a crowd. Knowing that a phrase is Buddhist in origin does not tell you how it is used now, and these two layers sit on top of each other in daily speech.

QIs karma a matter of punishment?

因果応報とは罰のことなのですか。

Not in the original teaching. It describes a process in which actions condition later states, without anyone deciding the sentence. The everyday Japanese use, which does carry a sense of deserved punishment, has drifted from that.

もとの教えではそうではありません。行いが後の状態を条件づける過程を指し、誰かが罰を決めるわけではありません。報いを受けて当然という響きを持つ日常の用法は、そこからずれています。

QWhat other Buddhist words are in everyday Japanese?

ほかにどんな仏教の言葉が日常語になっていますか。

A great many: words for being in trouble, for a rough idea, for making an effort, for a crowd, for being resigned to something. Most speakers have no idea of the origin, which is normal for a religion that arrived in the sixth century.

非常に多くあります。困ること、おおよその見当、精を出すこと、人だかり、諦めること。話し手のほとんどは由来を知りません。六世紀に入ってきた宗教としては当然のことです。

誤解されやすい

MYTHKarma in Buddhism means the universe punishing bad people.

仏教の業は、宇宙が悪い人を罰することだと思われがちです。

FACTThe original idea is a process of cause and condition without a judge. The punitive sense is closer to how the word is used in everyday Japanese and English than to the doctrine.
