At a summer festival or fireworks display, the approach to the shrine turns into a corridor of stalls under paper lanterns. They sell grilled squid, fried noodles, octopus balls, candied apples, shaved ice and chocolate-covered bananas, plus games like scooping goldfish with a paper net and shooting cork guns at prizes. Everything is a few hundred yen, eaten standing up, and the smell of soy sauce on a hot grill is the smell of a Japanese summer night.

Ask a Japanese adult about summer festivals and they will start listing stall food before they mention the shrine. Yatai are temporary stalls, usually a tent frame with a counter and a hot plate, set up along the road to a shrine or the river bank at a fireworks display.
Food stalls sell the festival classics: octopus balls, fried noodles, grilled corn brushed with soy sauce, whole grilled squid on a stick, shaved ice with bright syrup, candied apples and strawberries, and chocolate-dipped bananas. Game stalls run alongside them, where children scoop goldfish or bouncy balls with a fragile paper net, fish for water balloons, or shoot at prizes with a cork gun.
Prices are low, quality varies, and nobody minds. Many stalls are run by traveling operators who move from festival to festival all summer, and local groups run others to raise money. In recent years some towns have added cashless payment and stricter hygiene rules. For me the yatai are the reason to wear a yukata and go.
QWho runs the stalls?
Two kinds of people. Professional stall operators, traditionally called tekiya, travel a circuit of festivals through the season and sell the classic foods and games. Local neighborhood groups, school PTAs and shops also set up stalls, often selling drinks or simple food to raise money for the festival itself.
QWhat is goldfish scooping, and what do I do with the fish?
You pay a few hundred yen for a paper scoop and try to lift goldfish into a bowl before the paper breaks. Winners take the fish home in a bag, and many families end up with a tank they never planned to buy. Some stalls let you scoop bouncy balls instead, which is easier and less responsibility.
QIs it OK to eat while walking around?
At a festival, yes; it is one of the few places in Japan where eating while walking is normal. Still, many people step to the side or find a low wall to sit on, and everyone carries their trash to a bin or takes it home. Do not leave skewers on the ground.
