A futon in Japan is not what the word means abroad. It is not a sofa bed. It is a set of bedding: a firm, fairly thin mattress that you lay directly on the tatami, and a quilt that goes on top. At night you take it out of a built-in cupboard, lay it out, and sleep on the floor.
In the morning you fold it and put it back, and the room becomes an ordinary room again. That is the real point of the system: in a small house, a room does not have to be a bedroom all day. There is a maintenance routine too.
Because you sleep close to the floor, damp is the enemy, so on a sunny day you hang the mattress over a balcony rail to air it, and beating it with a paddle used to be a standard sound of a Japanese afternoon. A freshly aired futon smells of sun, and it is one of the small pleasures of living here.
日本の布団は、海外でその語が指すものとは違います。ソファベッドではありません。寝具の一式で、畳の上に直接敷く、しっかりした薄めの敷布団と、その上にかける掛布団からなります。
夜は押し入れから出して敷き、床で寝ます。朝はたたんでしまい、部屋はまた普通の部屋に戻ります。この仕組みの本当の意味はそこにあります。狭い家では、一室が一日中寝室である必要はないのです。手入れの習慣もあります。
床に近いところで寝るので湿気が敵です。晴れた日はベランダの手すりに干し、布団叩きで叩く音は日本の午後の定番の音でした。干したての布団は太陽の匂いがします。ここで暮らす小さな喜びのひとつです。

It takes a few nights. The mattress is firmer than a bed, and many people find it better for their back. Tatami gives more than a hard floor would, and you would not lay a futon on concrete.
数晩は慣れが要ります。ベッドより硬く、腰に良いと感じる人も多いです。畳には硬い床にはない弾力があり、コンクリートの上に布団を敷くことはありません。

どうして毎日しまうのですか。
For space and for air. A room used for sleeping becomes a room for everything else, and lifting the mattress off the floor lets the moisture underneath dry out.
場所と空気のためです。寝るための部屋が他の用途にも使えますし、床から離すことで下にたまった湿気を逃がせます。
QDo people still use them?

Many do, but beds are now more common in cities, especially among younger people and in flats with wooden floors. Most households have a futon set anyway, for guests.

布団を収納する「押し入れ」は、奥行きが布団の三つ折りに合わせて約90センチに作られていることが多い。上段に布団、下段に季節物を入れるのが一般的な使い方。布団を干す習慣は湿度の高い日本の気候に対応したもので、ダニやカビの抑制にも効果があるとされる。ただし布団叩きで強く叩くと繊維を傷め、かえってダニの死骸を細かくするという指摘があり、近年は軽くはらう程度がすすめられる。英語の futon は日本語からの借用語だが、指す物はマットレス付きの折りたたみソファで、日本の布団とは別物である。羽毛布団が普及したのは1970年代以降。
