A typical Japanese home has three separate spaces: a toilet room, a washbasin area used for changing, and a bathroom containing only the tub and a washing space. The toilet is kept apart because the bath is a place for relaxing and getting clean, and the two ideas do not mix. Cheap studio apartments combine them into a plastic unit bath, which many Japanese people consider a real downgrade.

One of the first things a foreign guest notices in a Japanese home is that the word bathroom does not mean what it means back home. The toilet is in a room of its own, often small enough that your knees nearly touch the door, and it has its own slippers.
The bath is somewhere else: you pass through a washroom with a sink and a washing machine, which doubles as the changing area, and then enter a wet room with a deep tub and a tiled or plastic floor where you wash before getting in. The separation reflects a way of thinking about cleanliness.
The bath is a place to soak and relax, often in water the whole family shares, so the toilet is kept as far from it as the floor plan allows. Real estate listings even state whether the toilet and bath are separate, because the alternative, a compact unit bath with everything in one plastic capsule, lowers the rent noticeably.
QWhy are there special slippers just for the toilet?
For the same reason the toilet has its own room: the floor there is considered unclean, and you should not carry that onto the floors where people sit and sleep. Put them on when you go in, take them off when you come out. Walking back into the living room in toilet slippers is a classic guest mistake.
QWhat is a unit bath?
A prefabricated bathroom molded from plastic panels, sometimes with the toilet, sink and tub all inside one waterproof capsule. In real estate talk, unit bath usually implies that the toilet is in there with the tub, which Japanese renters generally try to avoid.
QWhere do I brush my teeth, then?
At the washbasin in the washroom, the space between the hallway and the bath. It is also where the washing machine usually lives and where you undress before bathing, so knock before entering if someone is in the bath.

FACTIt is usually three rooms, not one: a toilet cubicle, a washroom with the sink, and a wet room with the tub, and only the last is called the bath.
