A kakejiku is a hanging scroll, and it embodies a different idea of how art lives in a house. A painting or a piece of calligraphy is mounted on layers of silk and paper by a specialist, with a wooden rod at the bottom so that it hangs straight and can be rolled from the bottom up.
It is displayed in the tokonoma, the alcove of a Japanese room, and it is changed. A scroll with plum blossom goes up in late winter and comes down when the plum season passes; a tea host chooses one that sets the theme of the gathering. For the rest of the year it is rolled, wrapped and kept in a paulownia box, out of the light.
That is why scrolls hundreds of years old can still be bright, while a European painting of the same age has spent every one of those years on a wall. It also means the room changes through the year without anything being bought. If you are given one, the important thing is to roll it evenly and store it somewhere dry.
掛け軸は、家の中で美術がどう生きるかについて、別の考え方を体現しています。絵や書を、専門の職人が絹と紙を重ねて表装し、下に木の軸を付けます。まっすぐ垂れ、下から巻き上げられるようにするためです。掛ける場所は和室の床の間で、そして掛け替えます。

Light, humidity and dust damage paper and silk, and the mounting itself can warp. Rotating scrolls preserves them and lets the room follow the season, which is the point of the alcove.
光と湿気と埃が紙と絹を傷め、表装そのものも歪みます。掛け替えれば長持ちしますし、部屋が季節をたどります。それが床の間の眼目です。
QHow do I roll one up?
巻くときはどうすればいいですか。
Lower it with both hands, roll evenly from the bottom without pulling tight, tie the cord loosely and lay it flat in its box. Rolling it too tightly is the usual way scrolls get creased.
両手で下ろし、下から均等に、きつく引かずに巻きます。紐はゆるく結び、箱に平らに納めます。折れ皺の多くは、きつく巻きすぎたことによるものです。
QAre they expensive?
高いものなのですか。
The range is enormous. A modern printed scroll costs very little, while a work by a known hand with fine mounting can cost a great deal. Second-hand shops and temple markets are where most people start.
