It includes individual portraits, class and club group photos, candid shots from school trips and sports day, and often pages where classmates write short messages to each other. A committee of students and teachers works on it for months. For many people it becomes the one physical record they keep of an entire stage of childhood.

A graduation album is a thick, custom-made yearbook that almost every Japanese school produces for each class as it graduates, whether from elementary school, junior high, high school or even kindergarten. It is usually funded by a small fee collected from families over several years, and a committee of students and teachers spends months putting it together, choosing photos, writing captions, and laying out pages.
Alongside individual portraits and formal class photos, it typically includes candid shots from school trips, sports day, and ordinary lessons, and it often has blank pages at the back where classmates write short farewell messages to each other in the final weeks before graduation. Students usually get it just before their graduation ceremony, and many keep it for life. What I find striking is how physical the whole tradition is, in an age when most childhood photos exist only on a phone, this one printed book still gets pulled out at reunions decades later.
卒業アルバムとは、日本のほぼすべての学校が、小学校でも中学校でも高校でも、そして幼稚園でさえも、卒業する学年ごとにつくる分厚い一冊です。たいてい何年もかけて家庭から集められるわずかな学年費でまかなわれ、生徒と教師からなる委員会が何か月もかけて写真を選び、キャプションを書き、ページを組んでいきます。
個人の証明写真や正式なクラス集合写真とともに、修学旅行や運動会、ふだんの授業でのふとした表情の写真が収められることが多く、巻末にはクラスメート同士が卒業前の数週間に短い別れのメッセージを書き合う余白のページがよくあります。
生徒は卒業式の直前にこれを受け取り、多くの人が一生手元に残します。私が印象深く思うのは、この習慣がどれほど「物」として残ることです。子どもの写真の多くがスマートフォンの中にしかない時代でも、この一冊は何十年もたった同窓会でまた開かれます。

学校によりますが、卒業時に一括で払うのではなく、学校の諸経費の一部として何年もかけて少しずつ集められることが多いです。個人ページの数や印刷の質によって金額は上がることもあります。

生徒が自分たちで作るのですか。
Partly. A student committee, sometimes helped by a specialist publishing company, chooses photos and writes some captions, while teachers oversee the content and a professional company handles printing and binding.
一部はそうです。生徒の委員会が、専門の出版会社の手を借りながら写真を選び、一部のキャプションを書きます。内容は教師が監修し、印刷や製本は専門業者が行います。
QWhat if a student transfers away before graduating?
卒業前に転校した生徒はどうなるのですか。
Practices vary, but many schools still include a student's earlier class photos and sometimes mail the finished album to their new address, so they are not simply left out of the record.
学校によって対応は異なりますが、多くの学校は転校前のクラス写真をそのまま収録し、完成後に新しい住所へ送ることもあり、記録から単純に消えてしまうわけではありません。
