Once a year, usually in autumn, a Japanese school holds a sports day. The whole school takes part, divided into two teams, and families come to watch and eat lunch together on mats. Events include relays, tug of war and mass choreographed displays. Practice takes weeks, and the emphasis is on the group rather than on individual winners.

Undokai is the Japanese school sports day, and it is a much larger event than the name suggests. It happens once a year, the whole school takes part, and families come to watch. Parents arrive early to claim a spot with a mat, and at lunchtime everybody eats together on the ground, which for many children is the best part.
The school is divided into two teams, usually red and white, and points are scored across relays, tug of war and races. What is distinctive is the group events. Classes spend weeks rehearsing synchronized dances or formations, and the aim is for everyone to move as one rather than for one child to stand out.
There has been real debate about this. Human pyramids were a traditional part of it and caused a significant number of injuries, and many schools have now dropped or limited them.
QWhy do parents queue so early?
For a viewing spot with a good line of sight. At popular schools people start queueing before dawn, and some schools have introduced lotteries or numbered areas to stop it.
QWhat are the human pyramids about?
Kumitaiso, mass gymnastic formations, were a long-standing centerpiece. After reports of serious injuries, the education ministry asked schools to review them, and many have stopped the tall pyramids.
QIs there a winner?
Teams are scored and one wins, but individual results are downplayed. Some schools have experimented with removing rankings from races entirely, which is itself controversial in Japan.
