- 年中行事必修 ゴールデンウィークGolden Weekthe spring holiday cluster 四つの祝日が一週間に固まっている。だから日本中が同時に動く。
- 年中行事必修 こどもの日kodomo no hiChildren's Day and the carp streamers 空を泳ぐ鯉。なぜ鯉なのか、という中国の故事まで話せると深い。
- 季節必修 ツバメの巣tsubame no suthe swallow nests built above shop entrances every spring 軒先に巣を作ると縁起がいいとされる。店は糞よけの受け皿を置いて共存する。
- 季節必修 黄砂kosathe yellow dust blown in from deserts on the Asian continent モンゴルや中国の砂漠の砂が偏西風に乗って飛んでくる。春の霞んだ空の正体。
- 武道標準 大相撲の本場所honbashothe six official grand sumo tournaments held each year 奇数月に15日間。東京で3回、大阪・名古屋・福岡で1回ずつ。
- 年中行事標準 憲法記念日kenpo kinenbiConstitution Memorial Day, May 3rd 憲法が施行された日。公布の日は別にあり、そちらは11月3日の文化の日になっている。
- 年中行事標準 昭和の日とみどりの日Showa Day and Greenery Daythe two late-April holidays that swapped names and dates 4月29日は昭和天皇の誕生日だった。名前を二度変え、みどりの日は5月4日へ引っ越した。
- 年中行事標準 柏餅とちまきkashiwamochi and chimakithe two sweets eaten on Children's Day, east and west 同じ日に、東は柏餅、西はちまき。理由がそれぞれある。
- 食べもの標準 山菜ときのこsansai and mushroomswild vegetables and mushrooms from the mountains 春は山菜の苦み、秋はきのこの香り。山からしか来ない、季節が一週間で動く食材。
- 歴史標準 日本国憲法the Constitution of Japanthe postwar constitution 1947年の施行以来、一度も改正されていない。
- 現代の暮らし標準 クールビズcool bizthe summer campaign to work without a jacket and tie 2005年に始まった。上着とネクタイを外し、室温は28度を目安にする。
- 季節標準 棚田tanadaterraced rice paddies cut into mountain slopes 平地が少ない土地で、斜面そのものを階段状に田んぼにした。
- 学校生活標準 運動会undokaischool sports day 親が場所取りに朝5時から並ぶ。競技より、組体操と行進が驚かれる。
