A honbasho is an official grand sumo tournament. There are six a year, one in every odd-numbered month: three in Tokyo, and one each in Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Each lasts fifteen days, starting and ending on a Sunday. Wrestlers in the top division fight once a day, and their win-loss record decides whether they move up or down the rankings for the next tournament.

Sumo is not a sport with a long season of games. Instead, everything happens in six official tournaments called honbasho. They are held in January, March, May, July, September, and November. The Tokyo tournaments take place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan, and the others travel to Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka.
Each tournament runs for fifteen days. A top-ranked wrestler fights one bout a day, so fifteen in total, and getting eight wins, a winning record called kachikoshi, is the key goal because it usually means moving up.
The top-division wrestler with the most wins receives the Emperor's Cup on the final day. Tickets for the Tokyo tournaments can be hard to get, but the matches are shown live on TV every afternoon, and I think watching a whole day on TV is a good way to start.
相撲は、長いシーズンを通して試合を重ねるスポーツではありません。すべては、本場所と呼ばれる年6回の公式の大会で行われます。開かれるのは1月、3月、5月、7月、9月、11月です。
東京の場所は両国国技館で開かれ、ほかは大阪、名古屋、福岡を回ります。1場所は15日間です。上位の力士は1日1番、合計15番を取り、8勝して勝ち越すことが大きな目標です。勝ち越せば、たいてい番付が上がるからです。
幕内でいちばん多く勝った力士は、最終日に天皇賜杯を受け取ります。東京場所の券は手に入りにくいことがありますが、取組は毎日午後にテレビで生中継されるので、まずテレビで1日通して見てみるのがよいと思います。

力士は場所と場所の間に何をしているのですか。
They train at their stable every morning, and in some months they go on regional tours called jungyo. Tour bouts are exhibitions and don't count toward the rankings.
毎朝、所属する部屋で稽古をしていて、時期によっては巡業と呼ばれる地方巡りに出ます。巡業の取組は花相撲で、番付には関係しません。

すべての力士が毎日相撲を取るのですか。
No. Only the top two divisions fight every day. Wrestlers in the lower divisions have seven bouts spread over the fifteen days.
いいえ。毎日取るのは上位の2つの階級だけです。それより下の力士は、15日間のうちに7番を取ります。
QWhat happens if two wrestlers finish with the same record?
2人の力士が同じ成績で並んだらどうなるのですか。
If they are tied for first place after the last day, they fight a playoff bout called a kettei-sen. The winner takes the tournament.
最終日を終えて優勝争いで並んだ場合は、決定戦と呼ばれる取組を行い、勝った力士が優勝します。

いまの年6場所になったのは1958年で、それまでは東京中心に年2〜4場所の時代が長かった。1場所15日も、1949年から固定されたとされる。1月・5月・9月は東京の両国国技館、3月は大阪、7月は名古屋、11月は福岡で開かれ、1月から順に初場所・春場所・夏場所・名古屋場所・秋場所・九州場所と呼ばれる。最終日の「千秋楽」は、芝居の興行でも使われる言葉だ。幕内と十両は毎日1番取るが、幕下以下は15日間で7番だけ。本場所以外の巡業や花相撲の勝敗は、番付に影響しない。
