Yobidashi are the attendants at a sumo tournament who wear traditional clothes and call out each wrestler's name in a long, singing voice before a bout. That's only part of the job. Before every tournament, they build the clay ring by hand. During it, they sweep the ring, beat drums, and carry the sponsors' banners around the ring.

When you watch sumo, the first voice you hear before each bout belongs to a yobidashi. Holding a white fan, he calls out the names of the two wrestlers in a long, singing tone. Many visitors think that's all these attendants do, but their job is much bigger. Before every tournament, the yobidashi build the ring themselves.
They pack down clay with simple tools and shape the straw bales that mark the edge, working together over several days. During the tournament, they sweep the ring between bouts, refill the baskets of salt, and walk around the ring carrying the banners of companies that put prize money on a bout.
They also beat a large drum, to call people to the tournament in the morning and to send them home at the end of the day. Sumo has wrestlers and referees, but without the yobidashi, there would be no ring and no show. I think they are the quiet backbone of the sport.
