Dogi is a general term for the uniform worn while practicing a martial art, and it changes noticeably from one discipline to the next. A judo dogi is thick and reinforced at the shoulders and knees, since practitioners grab and pull on it constantly, while a karate dogi is lighter and looser to allow fast kicks and punches. Kendo uses a completely different outfit, a dark cotton top and a wide pleated skirt called a hakama, worn over armor. Almost all versions wrap left over right and close with a cloth belt, whose color usually signals rank.

Dogi is the umbrella term for a martial arts uniform, but it's really several very different outfits depending on the art. A judo dogi is heavy, thickly woven cotton reinforced at the collar and knees, built to survive being grabbed, twisted, and thrown to the floor hundreds of times.
A karate dogi is thinner and cut more loosely, since the sport is built around fast strikes rather than grappling. Kendo practitioners wear something else entirely: a simple top and a wide, pleated hakama, both usually dyed indigo or black, worn underneath body armor.
What almost all of them share is the belt, tied at the waist, whose color is one of the most visible signs of a practitioner's rank. If you ever wonder why someone's uniform looks strangely bulky or worn through at the shoulder, it's usually years of being grabbed exactly there.
道着とは武道の稽古着を指す総称ですが、実際には種目ごとにかなり違う衣服です。柔道着は厚く織られた丈夫な綿でできていて、衿や膝が補強されており、何百回も掴まれ、ねじられ、投げられても持ちこたえるように作られています。

Judo involves constant grabbing, gripping, and throwing, so the fabric has to survive being pulled without tearing. Karate relies on strikes, not grabs, so a lighter uniform works fine.
柔道は常に掴んで組んで投げるため、生地は引っ張られても破れない丈夫さが必要です。空手は掴み合いではなく打撃が中心なので、軽い道着で十分です。
QDoes the belt color always mean the same rank across different martial arts?
帯の色は、どの武道でも同じ段位を表すのですか。
No. Each art and even each school sets its own color system, so a brown belt in one style isn't automatically equal to a brown belt in another.
