Before a bout, sumo wrestlers throw a handful of salt onto the dohyo, or ring. In Shinto, salt is used to purify a place, and sumo keeps many Shinto customs. Only wrestlers in the top two divisions throw salt. Many of them throw it again each time they return to their corner during the warm-up before the bout.

One of the first things visitors notice at a sumo tournament is the salt. Before a bout, each wrestler takes a handful from a container near his corner and throws it onto the ring, sometimes in a big arc. The reason usually given is purification.

In Shinto, salt is used to make a place clean, and the sumo ring is treated as a sacred space. That is why a roof in the style of a Shinto shrine hangs above it. The salt is said to be a prayer for safety, too.

Only the wrestlers in the top two divisions, called sekitori, throw salt, so it is also a sign of rank. Lower-ranked wrestlers normally go straight into their bouts. Watching how each wrestler throws it is one of the small pleasures of a day at the sumo.

Q

Why do only some wrestlers throw salt?

Throwing salt is a privilege of the sekitori, the wrestlers in the top two divisions, juryo and makuuchi. Lower-ranked wrestlers normally go straight into their bouts, although they have sometimes been told to throw salt when the schedule was running too far ahead.

Q

What is the water they take before the salt?

That is chikara-mizu, or power water. A wrestler rinses his mouth with a ladle of water as a kind of purification, then wipes his mouth with a sheet of paper.

Q

Why do some wrestlers throw so much?

The amount is up to each wrestler. Some throw a big handful as part of their style, and the crowd often cheers for it, while others throw just a little.
