The banzuke is the official ranking list for professional sumo, published before each of the six annual tournaments. Every wrestler appears on it, with rank shown by position and by the size of the characters. It is written by hand in a thick brush script specific to sumo, and the word is also used generally in Japanese for any ranking.

The banzuke is the ranking sheet of professional sumo, issued before each of the six tournaments held every year. Every wrestler in the sport appears on a single large sheet, arranged in two columns, east and west, with east treated as the senior side. Rank is shown by where your name sits and by how large the characters are, so a wrestler's whole standing is visible at a glance, and the names at the bottom are written so small that they are hard to read without leaning in.
It is written by hand in a brush style used only for this purpose, thick and packed tightly with almost no white space, and the traditional explanation for that density is that a full sheet wishes for a full house at the tournament. The word has spread into ordinary Japanese, where any ranked list, of restaurants, of companies, of anything, can be called a banzuke.
番付は大相撲の格付け表で、年に六回の場所ごとに発表されます。この世界のすべての力士が一枚の大きな紙に載り、東と西の二つの欄に分かれて並びます。東が上位とされます。
地位は名前の位置と文字の大きさで示されるので、力士の立場の全体がひと目で分かります。下のほうの名は、身を寄せなければ読めないほど小さく書かれます。この用途にだけ使われる筆の書体で手書きされ、太く、ほとんど余白なく詰めて書かれます。
その密度について伝統的に語られる説明は、紙が満ちていることが場所の満員を願うものだ、というものです。この語はふつうの日本語にも広がっていて、飲食店でも企業でも何でも、順位をつけた一覧は番付と呼ばれます。

QWhy is it written so densely?
どうしてあんなに細かい字で書いてあるのですか。
The traditional explanation is that leaving no gaps wishes for a tournament with no empty seats. Practically, it also fits every wrestler in the sport onto one sheet, and the script was developed for exactly that.
すき間を作らないことが、空席のない場所を願うのだという説明が伝統的にされます。実際的にも、この世界のすべての力士を一枚に収めるためで、書体はまさにそのために作られました。
QWhen is it published?
いつ発表されるのですか。
About two weeks before each tournament begins, and the announcement is news: promotions, demotions and a wrestler's first appearance in a higher division are all reported. Printed copies are sold and are popular souvenirs.
各場所の始まるおよそ二週間前で、その発表自体が報道されます。昇進、降格、初めて上の番付に載ったことなどが伝えられます。印刷されたものが売られていて、土産としても人気があります。
